Western Cape ‘Well Prepared’ For Wildfire Season After DA Oversight Inspections

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says recent inspections at key wildfire-response facilities indicate that the Western Cape government is ready to face the province’s peak fire season.

The region traditionally sees an increased risk of veld fires from November to April, when hot, dry and windy weather creates conditions that allow flames to spread rapidly.

These conditions have already fuelled fires along the Garden Route, across the Cape Winelands and in the Overberg.

Cape Town has also faced mounting pressure, with at least 632 vegetation fires recorded since last week.

Western Cape Fire Readiness Backed by DA Findings

DA environmental affairs spokesperson Dave Bryant said the party plans to continue oversight visits in the coming weeks.

However, early assessments show a proactive provincial approach, supported by aerial firefighting resources, well-trained fire crews and advanced coordination systems.

Calls for Public Caution Amid Heightened Wildfire Risk

Bryant urged communities and visitors to play their part in reducing fire risks during the dangerous summer period.

“We urge every resident and visitor to exercise extreme caution to adhere to all regulations, especially regarding open flames and to participate in community awareness efforts. By working together, we can significantly reduce the risk of devastating wildfires.”
