Western Cape Teacher Jailed For Raping Pupil In Classroom During School Hours

Western Cape Teacher Jailed For Raping Pupil In Classroom During School Hours

A Western Cape teacher, Jeremy Claasen, 38, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrific rape of a Grade 8 pupil inside his classroom during school hours.

The acting Worcester Regional Court prosecutor, Cornelius Prinsloo, revealed that Claasen had been sexually grooming the victim since she was in Grade 7, gaining her trust through social media chats before committing the assault in February 2020.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withheld the victim’s identity to protect her from further trauma. According to NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, Claasen manipulated the girl’s trust to the point where she felt comfortable around him—trust he brutally violated.

A Brazen Assault in a Place of Safety

On February 7, 2020, the pupil entered Claasen’s classroom to charge her phone—a routine act in a space meant for learning. Instead, Claasen closed the door, ignored her resistance, and raped her. Three days later, the traumatised girl confided in a friend, who alerted a teacher. The school principal immediately contacted the police, leading to Claasen’s arrest.

To shield the victim from additional distress, her testimony was presented via closed-circuit television during the trial, with an intermediary providing support. Medical evidence and witness statements from her friend corroborated her account, dismantling Claasen’s weak alibi that he was paying a traffic fine at the time.

Justice Served: Life Sentence for Western Cape Teacher

The court dismissed Claasen’s fabricated alibi, siding with the prosecution’s argument that the victim’s testimony was credible and consistent. Prinsloo emphasised that Claasen didn’t act impulsively—he targeted the girl, exploiting his position of authority in an environment where she should have been safe.

Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv. Nicolette Bell condemned the crime, stressing that educators should protect—not prey on—their students. She praised the Worcester Thuthuzela Care Centre and legal teams for their role in securing justice.
