Western Cape Premier Allan Winde Thanks Government For Declaring Province A Disaster Area

Western Cape Premier Allan Winde has expressed gratitude to the national government for promptly declaring the province a disaster area. This declaration follows severe weather conditions that resulted in devastating floods, causing widespread damage and displacement.

In a joint debate in parliament on Friday, Winde highlighted the extensive impact of the inclement weather. The Western Cape experienced more than a week of relentless rain, which led to significant flooding.

Over 200 citizens have been displaced, and more than 40,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. Additionally, many roads remain submerged, with over 70 still underwater as of his address.

Premier Winde commended the government for its rapid response to the disaster. He specifically mentioned the collaboration with Mr Hlabisa and the Deputy Minister, noting a renewed sense of unity within the government.

On Friday, the Western Cape government wrote to the minister requesting a disaster declaration, and by the same day, they received confirmation.

Winde emphasized the Western Cape government’s dedication to building a better South Africa by supporting the government of national unity.

He acknowledged the collaborative efforts that have emerged in response to the disaster and reiterated the province’s commitment to working together to overcome such challenges.
