Western Cape Police Seize 92 Illegal Firearms And Arrest 92 Suspects In One Week

Western Cape police have intensified their fight against gun violence, confirming that 92 suspects were arrested and an equal number of illegal firearms confiscated within the past week.

The recovered weapons include handguns, rifles, homemade firearms, and semi-automatic weapons, with most of them seized in the Cape Metropole, where gang-related violence remains a daily threat.

Majority of Firearms Recovered in Western Cape Metropole

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said the operations were concentrated in areas with ongoing gang conflicts, including Delft, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Mitchells Plain, and Swellendam.

“Each firearm recovered represents not only a disruption to criminal operations but also the prevention of potential bloodshed in vulnerable communities,” Traut stated.

The most recent raids in the Cape Metropole alone led to the recovery of 19 firearms along with several rounds of ammunition. Authorities believe these seizures are crucial in curbing violence linked to rival gangs and drug turf wars.

“This week alone, operations in Delft, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Mitchells Plain and Swellendam led to the recovery of 19 firearms with several rounds of ammunition, underscoring SAPS’ focus on breaking the cycle of violence in areas hardest hit by gang rivalries and drug turf wars,” Traut added.
