WC Police Commissioner Raises Concerns Over Reliability Of Crime Statistics

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has expressed uncertainty about the reliability of the province’s crime statistics, stating that police are “not entirely confident” in the data released so far.
The release of South Africa’s national crime statistics, initially scheduled for Friday, has been postponed indefinitely, with a new date yet to be confirmed.
Mixed Trends in Crime Data for Early 2025
According to the Western Cape crime figures covering January to March 2025, there was a slight decline in several serious contact crimes, including murder and attempted murder.
Despite this progress, the province still ranks among the top four in the country for murder rates. Cases of gender-based violence, arson, and commercial crime have also shown an upward trend, raising concern among authorities and communities alike.

Commissioner Patekile noted that while earlier figures painted a challenging picture, recent trends suggest some improvement.
“We are happy so far up to today with the incidents that have been reported. But we can’t reverse what has happened in July and August, specifically in the gang areas,” he stated.
Patekile added that police remain optimistic about the next quarter’s numbers as efforts continue to tackle gang violence and strengthen community safety initiatives.
