Western Cape Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Wife’s Murder In George

A man from the Western Cape has been handed a life sentence for the brutal killing of his wife in 2022. The Circuit High Court in George delivered the verdict this week, marking the end of a high-profile trial.
Rodney Witbooi, 34, was convicted last week of murdering his 28-year-old wife, Sunee, after attacking her with a panga following an argument with her and her family.
Alongside the life sentence, Witbooi received 15 years each for attempted rape and attempted murder, seven years for housebreaking, and three months for a drug-related charge. The additional sentences will run concurrently with his life term.
Brutal Attack Sparks Life Sentence in Western Cape
Court documents reveal that the attack occurred in 2022 when Witbooi assaulted his wife after a dispute involving her family. He struck her multiple times on the head with a panga, resulting in fatal injuries.

“This sentence reflects the severity of the crime and sends a strong message about domestic violence in our communities,” court officials said.

The other sentences handed down to Witbooi include 15 years for attempted rape and attempted murder, seven years for housebreaking, and three months for drug possession.
