Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe To Be Impeached

It is a historic moment in democratic South Africa as Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe becomes the first judge to be impeached.
The parliamentary vote on his removal from office concluded recently, and the results have been announced. House chair Cedric Frolick declared on Wednesday that 305 members voted in favor of Hlophe’s removal, while 27 voted against.

The resolution to remove Judge President MJ Hlophe from office will now be communicated to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
As per the Constitution, the President has no discretion in this matter and is obligated to act in accordance with Parliament’s decision. The final step in the process is for President Ramaphosa to remove Hlophe from office.
Hlophe’s impeachment stems from his conviction of gross misconduct. He was found guilty of attempting to improperly influence two justices of the Constitutional Court in a case involving former President Jacob Zuma.
This misconduct undermines the integrity of the judiciary and compromises the principles of justice and fairness.
