Western Cape Fire Season Begins As 900 Firefighters And 33 Aircraft Deployed

Working on Fire (WoF) has confirmed the deployment of 900 firefighters and more than 33 aircraft as the Western Cape officially steps into its annual fire season. The move comes as authorities prepare for what is expected to be a demanding and unpredictable period.

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) reported an alarming 600 vegetation fires in Cape Town during a single week—before the fire season had even begun. Persistent south-easterly winds and soaring temperatures have already intensified pressure on firefighting teams across the province.

WoF spokesperson Linton Rensburg has called on communities to remain vigilant, stressing that the threat of wildfires is becoming increasingly unpredictable and no longer confined to specific months.

“Already the Working on Fire Kisugu Joint Venture has responded to 92 wildfires during what is traditionally considered the off-season, including 46 fires in the Western Cape between September and November,” Rensburg stated.

“This trend confirms that wildfire risk is no longer confined to traditional fire windows, but it has become a year-round climate-driven threat.”

Rising Wildfire Risk as Climate Patterns Shift

According to Rensburg, the evolving climate has made wildfires a constant concern, placing firefighting units under ongoing strain. He noted that teams are facing heightened dangers well ahead of the usual peaks in the fire calendar.

Residents have been urged to take proactive steps to safeguard their properties, especially those situated near dense vegetation or forestry zones.

Communities Urged to Strengthen Property Safety

Rensburg advised homeowners to reduce potential fire hazards around their properties.

“Make sure that you clear your properties of any unnecessary rubble and those properties that are close to vegetation or forestry areas. Clean your gutters and also ensure that you do not have any overhanging trees close to your property.”

Authorities continue to emphasise that community cooperation is vital as the province braces for what could be one of its most challenging fire seasons yet.
