Western Cape Crime Crisis: Opposition Calls For More Police Resources As Gang Violence Escalates

Opposition parties in the Western Cape have intensified pressure on national government to urgently strengthen policing capacity as gang violence and serious crime continue to grip the province.

Their renewed call follows the release of alarming crime statistics showing that 78 people were murdered in the Western Cape in a single week, underscoring the scale of the crisis facing communities.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has appealed directly to Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, urging him to make the immediate deployment of additional detectives to the province a top priority.

The DA warned that chronic shortages in policing resources are leaving residents dangerously exposed to violent crime and organised gangs.

“Communities cannot be expected to live under siege while detectives lack vehicles, manpower, and basic operational support,” the party said.

According to the party, understaffed detective services and inadequate operational capacity are undermining efforts to investigate crimes effectively and bring perpetrators to justice.

Opposition criticises stalled policing cooperation agreement

The Good Party has also added its voice to the growing criticism, pointing to what it describes as a failure by government to honour earlier commitments on coordinated policing.

Secretary-General Brett Herron said a policing cooperation agreement signed by all three spheres of government in August 2024 had yet to produce tangible results.

“Eighteen months later, those promises of ‘joint planning’ and ‘coordinated action’ have failed to translate into safety on the ground. Instead of a safer city, violent crime continues to surge, particularly in poorer communities where gangsters operate with near impunity,” Herron said.

In response to the mounting pressure, Cachalia’s office confirmed that the acting minister is expected to formally address the concerns raised by opposition parties later this week.

Communities and political leaders alike are watching closely, hoping for decisive action as violence continues to claim lives across the province.
