‘They Were Innocent’: Wesbank Families Reject Gang Claims After Four Killed In Mass Shooting

The Wesbank community is demanding justice after a deadly mass shooting in Strandveld Street claimed the lives of four adults and left a seven-year-old boy injured.

Three women and one man were killed in the shooting on Saturday, sending shock through the community.

Among the victims were relatives Washiela Opperman and Marius Opperman. Washiela was married to Marius’ brother.

Families Reject Claims Wesbank Victims Were Gangsters

A family representative and community leader, who asked not to be identified, said speculation that the victims were linked to gangs was false.

According to the source, the shooting is believed to have stemmed from jealousy linked to a family-run fruit and vegetable stall operated by Washiela and her husband.

“There is speculation that the shooting was gang-related. That is not true because neither of the victims are gangsters,” the source said.

“According to my understanding, this is a jealousy thing that has been coming on for a very long time. They have their own fruit and veg stall and are working for their family.”

The community leader said she had spoken to the victims moments before gunfire erupted.

“I came from a friend of mine and stood by them, chatting for a few minutes. I left to go home, and on my way back, before I could even reach my gate, that was when the shooting happened.”

Seven-Year-Old Boy Remains In Hospital After Wesbank Attack

The seven-year-old boy injured during the shooting remains in hospital after witnessing his mother being killed.

“The families are trying to be strong, but it is affecting them. Washiela was a mother to four children, and Marius was a father to one son,” the source said.

“They were all innocent and did not deserve to have their lives ended like this.

“We want justice and appeal to anyone who knows anything or saw anything to come forward and inform the police. They can stay anonymous, but we want those who did this to be held responsible.”
