Welkom Court Finds Patient Guilty After Throwing Faeces At Healthcare Worker

Welkom Court finds the patient, a 38-year-old man guilty of assault and humiliating healthcare workers after pouring a bucket of faeces over a Free State clinic worker.

Welkom Magistrate’s Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, 27 February, with sentencing scheduled for 20 March 2025. The disturbing incident took place at Thabong Clinic in July 2024.

Meanwhile, the court heard that the disgruntled patient first visited the clinic in the early hours of 25 July 2024 and complained about slow service.

He left voluntarily but returned the next day with a bucket of faeces.

Without warning, he threw the contents over an unsuspecting healthcare worker.

The degrading attack caused chaos in the reception area, disrupting services and forcing the clinic to close early.

However, the Free State Department of Health revealed that the man boasted about the attack on social media, further highlighting the seriousness of his actions.

Police investigations later confirmed he was a parolee, leading to his immediate arrest for:
The assault at the clinic.
Violating his parole conditions.

Department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi confirmed that the affected healthcare worker and colleagues received counselling before returning to work.

“They have demonstrated resilience and dedication to their patients,” Mvambi said.

Free State MEC for Health Monyatso Mahlatsi applauded the worker for her strength and commitment to justice.

“We commend her for standing firm in the face of adversity and pursuing justice against her perpetrator,” Mahlatsi stated.

He also stressed the importance of the upcoming sentencing, saying it should send a clear message:

“Violence and abuse will not be tolerated in our health facilities. We urge all patients to follow proper complaint procedures instead of resorting to violence.”

On the 20 March sentencing will determine the consequences for the convicted man, with the department hoping for a strong message against attacks on public servants.
