Weekend Floods Devastate Tshwane – Two Dead, One Missing

Tshwane experienced a harrowing weekend as heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding across the region, leaving two people dead and one missing. The flooding caused significant disruption, with social media flooded with dramatic footage of submerged streets, fast-moving waters, and flooded properties in areas such as Tembisa, Ivory Park, and Pretoria.

Search for Missing Person Continues

City of Tshwane Emergency Management Services spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni confirmed that emergency personnel and police are searching for a man believed to have been swept away in Centurion near SuperSport Park cricket stadium. “The man ran into the river after being chased by a security guard and was believed to be swept away by the [water],” Mnguni said.

Emergency services were stretched thin on Friday as reports of flooding incidents poured in.

Rabie and End Streets (21:45): A car with two occupants was stuck in a river. Firefighters successfully rescued both individuals, who were unharmed.

Albert Street and Nellmapius Drive (22:10): Another car with two occupants was trapped in the floodwaters. Rescuers diverted resources and saved the pair, who were also unharmed.

SuperSport Park (23:08): Rescuers found a car and motorcycle swept away by strong currents. Tragically, the motorcyclist and the car driver were found deceased. Another person was found clinging to a lamp pole and was successfully rescued without injuries.
Mnguni emphasised the coordinated efforts between Tshwane EMS, SAPS divers, and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services in handling the crisis.

Weather Service Warns of Continued Rain

South African Weather Service (SAWS) meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela forecasted more rain over the holiday period:

Christmas Day: A 30% chance of rain with possible afternoon thundershowers in the interior.

Monday (Today): A 60% chance of rain over the interior, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Limpopo, and North West, with widespread rainfall (80% chance) expected in KZN. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and hail are possible in the North West.

Tuesday: Scattered showers and thundershowers in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and follow safety guidelines as adverse weather conditions persist.
