Wedela Tavern Shooting Leaves 17 Dead As Gauteng Police Hunt Eight Suspects

Seventeen people have been killed in a mass shooting at a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, in the West Rand District, with Gauteng police searching for eight unidentified suspects. The deadly incident happened at about 21:30 on Saturday, 26 September 2026, after gunmen reportedly opened fire on patrons at the tavern.

According to police, patrons were gathered both inside and outside the establishment when the suspects arrived and began shooting at people outside. The attackers then entered the tavern, where they allegedly continued firing at patrons inside before fleeing the scene.

The suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. Police said the group allegedly searched some patrons and took their cellphones before escaping in two unidentified vehicles, while two vehicles were also set alight during the incident.

Wedela Tavern Shooting Claims 17 Lives

The Wedela tavern shooting left 17 people dead, including 13 men and four women. Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and declared all 17 victims dead.

A further 15 people sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. The injured victims were transported to medical facilities for further treatment.

Police have not yet established what prompted the shooting. The motive remains unknown as investigators work to piece together what happened inside and outside the tavern.

Gauteng Police Launch Manhunt For Eight Suspects

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for the eight suspects believed to have been involved in the shooting. Detectives, together with specialised police units, have been mobilised to identify and locate those responsible.

No arrests have been made at this stage. Police investigations are continuing as officers work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and trace the suspects.

The case includes 17 counts of murder, 15 counts of attempted murder and two counts of malicious damage to property. The charges relate to the deaths, injuries and damage reported during the incident.
