Wedding Cancelled: Groom And Father Arrested For Drunk Driving Hours Before Newcastle Ceremony

A wedding in Newcastle was called off after the groom and his father were arrested during a late-night drunk driving crackdown.

The arrests took place during a large-scale operation conducted by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), which targeted intoxicated drivers.

Dozens Arrested in Overnight Drunk Driving Operation

Authorities confirmed that 45 motorists were arrested between late last night and the early hours of the morning.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the operation formed part of intensified road safety enforcement.

Officials stated that those arrested had failed to comply with the law, with authorities invoking the message #NenzaniLaEzweni? (What are you doing in the nation?) during the crackdown.

The operation swept up individuals from various sectors of the community.

Among those arrested were a lecturer, a safety manager, two teachers, two nurses, a pharmacist, a municipal chief liaison officer and a student.

One lecturer reportedly claimed he could “go a week speaking only English without using Zulu”.

Wedding Cancelled as MEC Issues Stern Warning

Sibiya confirmed that the ceremony, which had been scheduled for 11am, would no longer take place.

“The wedding which was scheduled to take place at 11am today has been called off,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma also reacted strongly, warning authorities to act decisively. “Arrest all of them and have no mercy.”
