A Western Cape police officer is facing an internal investigation after being caught on camera making anti-foreigner remarks while travelling in an official South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle.
The incident, which has circulated on social media, shows the uniformed officer using a loudspeaker to broadcast comments directed at foreign nationals. Another officer was behind the wheel while the remarks were being made.
The officer repeatedly used the “abaHambe” slogan, which has become associated with groups campaigning against undocumented migrants, and referred to the 30 June deadline that has been promoted by some activists calling for foreigners to leave the country.

Western Cape Police Confirm SAPS Investigation Into Officer
Western Cape police have confirmed that the matter is being investigated. Management said efforts are under way to identify the officer before internal disciplinary processes begin.
In a statement, the provincial police distanced the organisation from the officer’s comments.
“Western Cape police wish to reiterate that such utterances do not represent the views of the SAPS and the values the organisation espouses as a law enforcement agency.
“Police officials are reminded to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.”
Vredendal Officer Believed To Be Involved
According to preliminary information, the officer captured in the video is attached to the Vredendal policing area on the West Coast.
Police have not released the officer’s identity as the internal investigation continues. Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident before any further action is announced.
SAPS Professional Conduct Under Spotlight
The incident has placed renewed attention on the expected standards of conduct for SAPS members while carrying out official duties.
Police management has stressed that officers are required to act professionally at all times, particularly when in uniform and using state resources. The outcome of the internal process will determine what disciplinary steps, if any, will follow.
