South African National Parks (SANParks) has begun evacuating staff and guests from Kruger National Park as dangerous rainfall levels are expected to worsen.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Red Level 10 warning for the park and surrounding municipalities, warning of extreme conditions as heavy rain continues to batter Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Rivers in the park are flowing well above bridge level, while several camps have been flooded, prompting urgent safety measures.

Day Visitors Barred From Kruger National Park 

SANParks suspended all day visits to the park on Thursday morning, citing safety concerns and strained emergency resources.

SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said the decision was precautionary and aimed at preventing potential emergencies.

“SANParks is mindful of the current strain on operational and emergency responses on resources during this period of persistent rainfall,” Louw said.

“The park has taken a precautionary decision not to allow day visitors into Kruger National Park until conditions improve.”

He added that access restrictions would be reviewed continuously.

“The decision to restrict day visitor access is a preventative safety measure and will be reviewed continuously as weather and road conditions change.”

SANParks apologised for the inconvenience caused to visitors.

WATCH: Letaba Rest Camp Evacuated as Floodwaters Rise

Helicopters were spotted near Letaba Rest Camp as SANParks moved to evacuate both staff and guests after floodwaters breached the area.

“Letaba rest camp is busy evacuating both staff and guests as the water has moved into the rest camp, breaking from the Letaba River,” Louw confirmed.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely as rainfall persists, with warnings that the situation could deteriorate further.
