A South African Police Service (SAPS) constable is under investigation after footage surfaced showing an alleged assault on a civilian inside a police station in Mpumalanga.

The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, has sparked concern and prompted swift action from authorities. The incident is said to have taken place at Volksrust Police Station on 2 April 2026.

Police officials have confirmed that both internal and criminal investigations are now underway.

SAPS Launches Internal and Criminal Probes Into Volksrust Incident

Police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the matter is being taken seriously, with a full internal inquiry already in progress.

“In addition to the internal investigation, a criminal investigation is also underway to ensure all aspects of this matter are addressed transparently.

“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified of the incident and it is expected that a parallel investigation will be conducted by this Directorate. The involvement of IPID is aligned with the SAPS’s commitment to accountability and transparency in the policing profession,” Mdhluli said.

Authorities say the dual-track investigation aims to ensure accountability and transparency in handling the case.

Mpumalanga Police Leadership Responds to Misconduct Allegations

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, stressed the importance of discipline within the police force.

“The professional conduct of our members is of utmost importance, and we are committed to maintaining public trust. We are determined to act swiftly and decisively against any wrongdoing,” said the General.

Mdhluli reiterated that the organisation remains focused on enforcing its code of conduct and maintaining high professional standards among its members.

Nine Officers Arrested in Separate Free State Murder Investigation

In a separate development, IPID has arrested nine police officers linked to a deadly shooting incident in the Free State.

The arrests were carried out at Bultfontein Police Station on Saturday following an investigation into a September 2024 shooting in Phahameng township. The officers, who are part of the Public Order Police (POP) unit, face four counts of murder.’

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping explained that the officers had responded to a domestic disturbance at the time.

“A call of a domestic dispute in Phahameng township where family members were allegedly involved in a fight.”

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
