Watch| Massive Diesel Tanker Fire Closes Major Gauteng Highway

On Monday, just before 10 AM, a significant fire erupted involving a massive 38,000-litre diesel tanker on the N4 westbound highway near the M17 in Pretoria North.

This alarming incident necessitated an extensive response from the Tshwane Emergency Services Department, dominating the headlines and causing major disruptions in the area.

Emergency Response Mobilization

Lindsay Mnguni, spokesperson for Tshwane emergency services, detailed the swift action taken to combat the blaze. A plethora of firefighting resources were dispatched from several local stations, including Rosslyn, Wonderboom, Innesdale, Central, Themba, and Ga-Rankuwa.

The response included two fire engines, two water tankers, one water carrier, one foam tender, and several specialized units dedicated to hazard materials. Additionally, the Madibeng fire services joined the efforts with their own resources, ensuring a comprehensive approach to extinguishing the fire.

Traffic Disruptions and Safety Concerns

In light of the ongoing efforts to contain the fire, the N4 highway was officially closed, forcing traffic to be redirected along alternative routes. Safety was prioritized as the scene was assessed to be unsafe for public access.

Both the Tshwane Metro Police Department and Gauteng Traffic Police were deployed to manage the situation. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries resulting from this catastrophic event; however, the impact on traffic and logistics was significant.
