In a now-viral video, EFF leader Julius Malema addressed allegations concerning his wardrobe choices. Many have jokingly suggested that his expensive designer clothes were purchased with funds looted from VBS Mutual Bank.

However, Malema clarified, “Louis Vuitton, Gucci, I’ve worn it before, I don’t wear it now, I make no apology about it. I didn’t buy it with VBS money. I bought LV and Gucci before VBS. If you are a recent graduate of journo, go and ask Debora Patta.”

The scandal involving VBS Mutual Bank has made headlines for years. The former chairperson of VBS, Tshifhiwa Matodzi, claimed in his testimony that the EFF received payouts to improve the bank’s public relations.

According to Matodzi, the EFF was paid R5 million and R1 million in monthly donations to help clean up the bank’s reputation after it provided a home loan to former President Jacob Zuma for Nkandla. He also mentioned that these payments were made to a company owned by Floyd Shivambu’s brother, Brian.

The Pretoria High Court sentenced Matodzi after he pleaded guilty to 33 counts. Confirmed reports indicate that the payments were indeed made to a company associated with the Shivambu family.

Despite these allegations, Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu have maintained their innocence. They have consistently downplayed any wrongdoing, and advocate Dali Mpofu has stated that the party received money through proper channels.
