Radio personality Anele Mdoda has shared a terrifying experience after an Uber driver allegedly threatened her with rape for choosing the “don’t talk to me” option on the app.

The 947 Breakfast Club host took to X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Monday morning to recount the ordeal, revealing that she had to pretend to be on Instagram Live to get home safely.

‘In My Country, We Would Rape You’ – Chilling Threat

Anele explained that after selecting the ride preference that prevents drivers from making conversation, the Uber driver became upset and allegedly said: “In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson.”

Anele then started recording to have evidence in case anything happened. “So after he threatened me with rape to keep in line, I started recording so that if anything happens to me, it’s on record. I faked being on Instagram Live. This was in Cape Town.”

According to Mdoda, when they arrived at her hotel, the driver continued shouting at her, which drew the attention of a nearby couple.

Uber South Africa Responds

SurgeZirc SA reached out to Uber for comment, and the company responded to Anele’s post on X: “We are sorry to hear about this. Kindly provide us with a phone number/email address linked to your account and the trip date and time via DM to assist further. Appreciate your understanding.”

The response was met with frustration from social media users, who blasted Uber for not doing enough to protect passengers from dangerous drivers.

Mzansi Reacts – ‘Uber in Cape Town is the Worst!’

Many X users shared their own traumatic experiences, agreeing that e-hailing services in South Africa have become unsafe.

@HeidiGiokos: “I’m sorry you had to go through this, Anele. I’ve always said that Uber drivers in Cape [Town] are the worst. My stomach is always tied when I take an Uber. And here’s a clear example of what happens!”

@Nonti_Mandita: “Yoh @Uber_RSA standards have really dropped. I was verbally attacked by an Uber driver because he saw a taxi parked outside my office parking. Then Uber support does their ‘investigation’, now the driver is playing victim. Yoh, I can’t 🤞🏽.”

Uber has yet to confirm what action they will take against the driver, but Mzansi is demanding justice. Many are urging the company to improve safety measures and ensure that riders are protected from such threats.
