Warren Masemola’s Emotional Farewell To Presley Chweneyagae At His Funeral

Warren Masemola’s Emotional Farewell To Presley Chweneyagae At His Funeral

Actor Warren Masemola gave a raw and emotional eulogy at the funeral of his friend Presley Chweneyagae, held Saturday at the Akasia Community Hall in Pretoria. Chweneyagae, known for his lead role in Tsotsi, passed away on May 27 from natural causes after experiencing sudden respiratory complications. He was 40.

“We Fought Because We Loved Each Other”

Masemola’s speech captured the complexity of a real friendship—one filled with love, concern, and confrontation. “My friend and I fought a lot,” he said with tears rolling down his cheeks. “I don’t understand people who don’t fight with those they claim to love. If you say you love someone, be there for them at every hour of their lives.”

He reflected on many difficult moments, including arguments and interventions. “I once drove from Johannesburg to Pretoria because Presley was being a nuisance. When I got there, he ran off to Tasie Kombuis and I had to fetch him,” he said. “We clashed a lot—especially about alcohol.”

A Wake-Up Call About Alcohol Abuse

Masemola used the platform to deliver a sobering message about alcohol abuse, particularly among Black communities. “Africans, alcohol tastes nice, yes—but if you love someone, you owe it to yourself to speak up. Say, ‘Please, go home. Your family needs you,’” he urged.

“We can’t be waking up to drink at 7 in the morning and only go home at 5 the next morning. That’s 22 hours of drinking. That’s not status—it’s a red flag. We found alcohol here, we drank it, and we’ll leave it behind. But if you truly care about your friend, tell them the truth. That’s what love is.”

Presley And Warren Masemola’s Bond Beyond Words

In a deeply intimate and surprising confession, Masemola shared a tender memory that showed the depth of their bond. “We used to kiss a lot, me and Presley. We’d look at each other in the studio and say, ‘You’re handsome,’ sing praises to each other and kiss,” he said, drawing a mix of emotional reactions from the crowd.

Through his tearful tribute, Masemola painted a picture of a friendship that was vulnerable, real, and unfiltered. He closed by reminding everyone to love loudly, correct firmly, and remember tenderly.
