KwaZulu-Natal police have uncovered a warehouse in Bluff, south of Durban, which was storing and selling expired food items and counterfeit goods allegedly imported from other countries.

Discovery In Durban Warehouse

Officials have stated that while it is not clear which countries the goods originated from, it is believed that they were shipped into South Africa. The items discovered include food, drinks, medication, and cosmetics. Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli was present at the scene.

Premier Ntuli expressed his concern, stating, “We’re in a warehouse which keeps goods from a ship. What has been discovered here is very unfortunate for our country because a lot of goods here do not have expiry dates, others are expired, and there are counterfeit goods which are not supposed to be in our country.”

Premier Ntuli emphasised that the counterfeit goods pose a significant threat to public health and negatively impact the country’s economy. The police discovered the illicit food items, drinks, medication, and clothing stored in containers meant for imported goods. Some of the food items found were reported to be rotten.

Premier Ntuli added, “Most of the products are counterfeit, expired, or lack expiry dates. Some have expiry dates that are questionable, such as antibiotics with a lifespan of more than five years.” He further highlighted that selling these products would negatively impact local products and endanger lives, especially children.

In a bold demonstration of leadership and commitment to public safety, Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, alongside Police Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, led a raid on the warehouse suspected of distributing expired food to South African consumers.

This swift action followed Premier Ntuli’s attendance at the inaugural KZN Council Against Crime, reinforcing his administration’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal activity.

Public Participation in Crime Prevention

The raid underscores the importance of public participation in crime prevention. Premier Ntuli praised the vigilant members of the public who reported the warehouse, reiterating the power of community vigilance in combating criminal behaviour.

This operation demonstrates the effectiveness of a united front between the government, law enforcement, and the public in addressing criminal enterprises. Commissioner Mkhwanazi commended Premier Ntuli’s proactive leadership, noting that the police are committed to rooting out illegal activities.

Premier Ntuli reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to tackling all forms of crime in KwaZulu-Natal, stating, “Let this serve as a warning to those who think they can operate with impunity. We will find you, and we will shut you down.”

As investigations into the warehouse continue, Premier Ntuli urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. “Together, we can create a safer, healthier environment for all citizens of KwaZulu-Natal,” he concluded.
