Vusimuzi Matlala To Learn Fate In Bail Bid Over Attempted Murder Charges

All eyes will be on the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Wednesday as businessman Vusimuzi Matlala waits to hear whether his bid for bail has been granted.
Matlala, a figure who has attracted both controversy and headlines in recent months, faces serious criminal charges. He stands accused of orchestrating a murder plot against his girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, a well-known socialite, in December 2023.
The 49-year-old initially abandoned his attempt at securing bail earlier this year but later revived the application in September. His legal team argued that keeping him behind bars was both unfair and dangerous to his health.
Matlala is not facing these charges alone. His wife, Tsakane, together with three co-accused, is also implicated. The group faces a raft of charges that range from attempted murder to money laundering, painting a picture of what prosecutors describe as a deeply coordinated criminal enterprise.
Vusimuzi Matlala’s Legal Team Raises Health Issues While State Warns of Flight Risk
During proceedings, Matlala insisted that remaining in custody would endanger his life. He testified that he suffers from asthma and chronic tonsillitis, conditions that could worsen under prison conditions. His defence further argued that the court should weigh his medical needs when considering his release.
The State, however, remains firm in its opposition. Prosecutors insist that Matlala represents a major flight risk. They highlighted his private jet and international assets in Mauritius as factors that could allow him to evade trial if granted bail.
According to the prosecution, his access to significant financial resources, coupled with international connections, makes him both capable and motivated to flee the country. The court was reminded that bail is not merely about medical or personal hardship but also about ensuring that an accused faces justice.
The final ruling will determine whether Matlala returns home under bail conditions or continues to await trial behind bars.
Parallel Spotlight: Commissioner Mkhwanazi Testifies
Adding to the drama is the timing of Wednesday’s events. On the same day that Matlala learns his fate, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to begin his testimony before the police commission of inquiry.

Mkhwanazi has already drawn national attention after a bombshell press briefing in July, where he linked Matlala to questionable dealings with senior politicians and high-ranking police officials.
Those remarks positioned the businessman at the centre of both criminal and political intrigue, making him a subject of heightened public scrutiny.
Yet, despite the storm swirling around his alleged connections, it is not those dealings that have landed him in jail. Instead, his arrest is tied specifically to the alleged attempted hit on Thobejane.

The case against Matlala has drawn public interest because it intertwines crime, politics, and celebrity culture. Thobejane, who has her own following as a socialite, became an unwilling figure in the unfolding drama after allegations surfaced that her partner had plotted against her.
For now, Matlala’s fate rests with the Alexandra Magistrates Court.
