Vusimuzi Matlala Denies Owning Private Jet Or Mauritius Boat Amid Attempted Murder Case

Gauteng tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has vehemently denied claims that he owns a private jet or a boat in Mauritius, calling the investigating officer’s statements “perjury” during his bail hearing.

The 49-year-old appeared in Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he formally requested bail in connection with charges of attempted murder against his ex-girlfriend, television actress, and influencer Tebogo Thobejane.

Matlala’s lawyer, Advocate Laurance Hodes SC, read a bail affidavit disputing last week’s statements from the investigating officer, who argued Matlala posed a flight risk due to alleged ownership of luxury assets abroad.

“He does not own a boat in Mauritius or a private jet. The officer has committed perjury. Her statements are untrue,” Hodes told the court.

Matlala Details Wealth, Personal Life, and Past Convictions

In his affidavit, Matlala provided an overview of his personal circumstances and past criminal record.

He revealed he is a self-employed director of four Pretoria-based companies—CAT VIP Protection, Lux of Africa Investments, Black AK Trading, and Medi Care 24 Tshwane District—earning a combined income of R250,000 per month.

He also disclosed ownership of a Midstream Ridge Estate property worth R6.6 million, a Mamelodi East property valued at R1.1 million, a Mercedes-Benz SUV, and six BMW sedans collectively valued at about R6 million.

Matlala lives with his wife, Tsakani, and their three daughters, and supports six other children financially.

Regarding his criminal history, Matlala admitted to a 2001 conviction for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, for which he served concurrent four-year sentences. He denied any other convictions or pending cases, despite the state noting 11 prior arrests for charges ranging from attempted murder to illegal firearm possession.

Court Case Expands Amid Additional Murder Allegations

The state announced plans to add two more dockets from Pretoria to Matlala’s current attempted murder case involving Thobejane and her friends, Anele Malinga and Ncube Khumbulani.

These relate to the 2022 shooting of taxi billionaire Joe Sibanyoni in Centurion and the 2024 shooting of DJ Vettys (Seunkie Mokubong) in Pretoria West.

Matlala, along with his wife Tsakani (36), alleged hitmen Musa Kekana (35) and Tiego Floyd Mabusela (47), and Nthabiseng Nzama (23), faces charges including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering.

Kekana and Mabusela remain in custody after abandoning bail applications, while Tsakani and Nzama were released on R20,000 and R10,000 bail, respectively.

The October 17, 2023 shooting left Thobejane with a gunshot wound to the foot and Malinga paralyzed from a spinal cord injury. Fearing for her life, Thobejane fled South Africa and is currently in hiding abroad.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate Dyta Prinsloo postponed the bail ruling to September 17. Matlala has been in police custody since his arrest on May 14.
