Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Bail Judgment Postponed As Court Weighs Evidence In Alleged Hit Plot

Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s Bail Judgment Postponed As Court Weighs Evidence In Alleged Hit Plot

Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, a 49-year-old businessman accused of orchestrating a hit on his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane, will remain in custody after the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court reserved judgment in his bail application.

Matlala, along with his wife and three co-accused, faces multiple charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

Vusimuzi: Defence Questions State’s Evidence

During the hearing, Matlala’s legal team argued that the state has failed to produce direct evidence tying him to the alleged crime. His lawyer pointed out the absence of fingerprints, ballistics, or any physical proof linking him to the hit.

Prosecutors, however, countered with what they described as strong circumstantial evidence. They cited phone records, bank transfers, and electronic messages that allegedly implicate Matlala in the plot against Thobejane.

The state also flagged several inconsistencies in Matlala’s affidavit. These include multiple trips to Eswatini, destroyed cell phones, and the use of a fake identity document.

Proceedings wrapped up late in the afternoon, with Magistrate Dyta Prinsloo announcing a postponement.

“Sir, the matter is then postponed for judgment until 17 September. I am diarying it for 11 o’clock in the morning. The applicant can then step down,” said Magistrate Prinsloo.

Until then, Matlala will remain behind bars.
