Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Returns To Court To Challenge Bail Denial In Attempted Murder Case

Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is due to appear before the Johannesburg High Court to appeal the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court decision denying him bail.

In September 2025, Matlala’s bail application was dismissed after the court ruled that he posed both a flight risk and a danger to society. The decision followed his arrest in connection with the attempted assassination of his former partner, Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023.

Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Claims Court Made an Error

Matlala insists that the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court made an error in judgment by refusing him bail. During his earlier appearance, the businessman—who is the director of four companies—told the court that his continued detention would negatively impact his businesses, which reportedly pay monthly salaries totalling nearly R2 million.

He has denied any involvement in the alleged plot against Thobejane, arguing that the state’s case is weak and lacks sufficient evidence to link him directly to the crime.

Despite Matlala’s assertions, Magistrate Syta Prinsloo maintained that he had failed to prove exceptional circumstances justifying his release. The magistrate’s ruling concluded that granting bail would pose a risk to public safety and could compromise the ongoing investigation.

The High Court is now expected to review the initial decision, with Matlala hoping for a more favourable outcome that could see him temporarily regain his freedom as the case proceeds.
