Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala Denies ‘Fabricated’ WhatsApp Messages Linking Him To Brown Mogotsi

Alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has dismissed WhatsApp messages purportedly tying him to North West businessman Brown Mogotsi, insisting the communication was manipulated.

Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing police corruption, Matlala argued that some of the chats suggesting exchanges about the political killings task team (PKTT) were not genuine.

The committee convened at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria on Thursday, where Matlala maintained that his phone had been tampered with.

Claims of Fabricated Chats in Police Corruption Probe

The committee previously heard allegations that Mogotsi, described as an information peddler and “fixer”, acted as an intermediary between Minister Senzo Mchunu and Matlala.

Both men are said to be central figures in the alleged criminal infiltration of the police and the controversial decision to disband the PKTT.

However, Matlala challenged the legitimacy of the WhatsApp messages presented to him.

“Remember I spoke to you about the WhatsApps and that some of them they are fabricated, and I said I want to address the chairperson about them,” he told the committee.

He also denied any role in dissolving the political killings task team. “I don’t know what power I would have to disband the unit from the SAPS. What I heard from my affidavit is that thing was planned, I think, way back in 2019,” Matlala said.

Matlala further downplayed suggestions that he had influential ties to senior police officers and government ministers.
