Vladimir Putin Wins Record 88% In Russia’s Presidential Election

Exit polls and first results from Russia’s presidential election on Sunday showed that President Vladimir Putin won a record 88% of the vote, solidifying his hold on power.

This victory means that Putin, who has been in power since 1999, is set to become Russia’s longest-serving leader in over 200 years, surpassing Josef Stalin. The nationwide turnout surpassed the levels of the previous election, with supporters of Putin’s opponent, Alexei Navalny, organizing protests against the president. However, there was no independent tally of the number of participants in these demonstrations due to tight security measures.

Navalny’s widow, Yulia, appeared at the Russian embassy in Berlin, receiving cheers and chants of support. Exiled Navalny supporters also broadcasted protests on YouTube, both in Russia and abroad.

Despite the opposition’s efforts, Putin’s victory was not in doubt. However, Navalny’s death has left the opposition without its most influential leader.

The West continues to view Putin as an autocrat and a killer, with US President Joe Biden recently referring to him as a “crazy sob.” The election results further solidify Putin’s grip on power and his status as one of the most influential leaders in modern Russian history.
