Victim In Mugabe Son Shooting Case Allegedly Paid R250K To Keep Silent, Court Hears

The Alexandra Magistrates Court has heard that the victim in the shooting case involving Bellarmine Mugabe and his co-accused was allegedly paid to remain silent.

Proceedings on Friday revealed that the victim received R250,000, with an additional R150,000 reportedly promised.

The case stems from the shooting of Sipho Mahlangu, a security guard who was shot twice in the back at a Hyde Park residence. Mugabe and his cousin, Tobias Matonhodze, were both present during the incident.

Alleged Payment To Victim Raises Questions In Mugabe Son Case

Last week, the accused pleaded guilty to multiple charges linked to the shooting, as well as a separate incident in which Mugabe allegedly pointed a toy gun.

They have since approached the court seeking a suspended sentence or a fine.

Investigating officer Colonel Raj told the court that Mahlangu confirmed receiving the payment on Thursday.

“He was paid a sum of R250,000, and on the same day, a further R150,000 would be paid to him in cash.”

Colonel Raj further told the court that the firearm used in the shooting has not yet been recovered.

He said both accused individuals have not cooperated with police efforts to locate the weapon. Raj has urged the court to impose a harsh sentence.

The matter has been postponed to 29 April for sentencing.
