Veteran TV Host Ian Von Memerty Dies At 61 After Publicly Documenting Final Weeks

South African television personality Ian von Memerty has died at the age of 61.

His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday.

“We are sad to announce that our beloved Ian von Memerty passed away at the age of 61 in Johannesburg in the early hours of 23 February 2026,” the announcement read.

“As a family, we have done everything we can to love and respect him on his journey.

“We ask for privacy and respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we loved very much.”

According to online reports, Von Memerty died at a hotel in Johannesburg at approximately 03:00 on Monday, 23 February.

‘Dying for a Better Life’: Digital Series Documented His Decision

In February, Von Memerty released a Facebook and YouTube web series titled Dying for a Better Life, where he spoke openly about his decision to end his life on his own terms.

Across 14 chapters, some published posthumously, he discussed his reasoning and confirmed that he had chosen a private date. He described his decision as rooted in autonomy and a desire for control over his later years.

In the weeks leading up to his death, he addressed concerns about no longer being able to work, becoming financially dependent on loved ones, and facing a version of old age he did not wish to experience. He also referenced witnessing the prolonged deaths of his parents as a significant influence on his thinking.

In one video, he admitted that informing his children of his plans was one of the most painful moments of his life. “I am causing pain with this decision,” he said.

Although many described his death as suicide, Von Memerty rejected that term. In an interview with The Herald weeks before his passing, he referred to it as an act of “selfdeliverance”.

He explained that documenting his journey publicly was intended to raise awareness and make it clear that his decision was not driven by depression.

Speaking to YOU magazine, he said: “I have no desire to remove faith from anyone’s life. It is a wonderful gift in people’s lives. It gives them security and safety. This [series is] for people like me who would like a sense of ownership in their old age when it comes to their dying.”

A reaction video was uploaded on 24 February, in which he reflected on both the criticism and support he had received.

“I have felt so affirmed and confirmed in my choice to speak up, because there are a lot of people like us, who feel like us and think like us about the right to choose.”

Von Memerty Career Spanning Theatre, Television and Cruise Entertainment

Von Memerty built a multifaceted career as a theatre director, performer, writer, producer and television presenter. He was widely recognised as the host of Strictly Come Dancing and served as a judge on the first four seasons of SA’s Got Talent.

Later in his career, he worked as an entertainer on cruise ships before retiring from mainstream entertainment. He subsequently spent time working as a pet sitter in Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian, and their children, Oscar and Kasvia.
