VBS Mutual Bank Scandal: Tshifhiwa Matodzi’s Testimony And Allegations Against EFF

The VBS Mutual Bank scandal has been a significant topic of discussion in South Africa, especially following the recent testimony by the jailed former chairperson, Tshifhiwa Matodzi.

In his testimony, Matodzi revealed startling allegations involving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and their alleged receipt of substantial “donations” to clean up the bank’s reputation.

According to Matodzi, VBS Mutual Bank paid the EFF an initial sum of R5 million followed by monthly “donations” of R1 million.

These payments were allegedly made to mitigate the negative publicity surrounding the bank after it provided former President Jacob Zuma with a home loan for his Nkandla residence. Matodzi claims these transactions were funneled through Sgameka, a company owned by Brian Shivambu, the brother of EFF’s Deputy President, Floyd Shivambu.

Matodzi detailed that he met with EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu at a Sandton penthouse during the height of the Nkandla saga. The EFF had been vocal critics of VBS Mutual Bank for the loan granted to Zuma.

During this meeting, Matodzi proposed the “donations” to the EFF to improve the bank’s public image. The funds were allegedly transferred into a VBS Mutual Bank account belonging to Sgameka, thus avoiding a direct link to the party.

Matodzi was sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison by the Pretoria High Court after pleading guilty to 33 counts, including corruption, theft, fraud, money laundering, and racketeering.

Despite these serious allegations, both Malema and Floyd Shivambu have consistently maintained their innocence. Malema has publicly stated, “There is nothing that implicates us. Why are we not being arrested? Why are we not being charged if these [allegations] are legitimate?”

The VBS Mutual Bank scandal continues to unfold, and the testimonies and allegations only add to the complexity of the situation.

While Matodzi’s claims have sparked significant controversy, the legal and public scrutiny surrounding the EFF and their involvement in this case remains unresolved. The coming months will likely reveal more details and developments in this high-profile case.
