The backlash that followed on social media targeted Enhle directly, which prompted MaKhumalo to do what any mother worth her salt would do — wade into the comments section of Mpilo’s Instagram page and defend her daughter against the pile-on.

X user @UmzukuluKaFlo shared screenshots of MaKhumalo steadily pushing back against negative comments, and the response from viewers was largely one of support for the mama bear behaviour.

@Aphie91 pointed out the glaring double standard at play, noting that nobody applied the same energy when Musa himself was visibly cold towards another child, Nkanyezi, and declined to hold her either.

Here is where this story requires a moment of genuine reflection, because some of the comments circulating about baby Methuli are deeply unfair to an infant who has absolutely no say in the circumstances of her birth or the family dynamics she has arrived into.

Several social media users made remarks about the child being inherently unlikeable or destined to carry negative energy — comments that, regardless of how one feels about the adults involved, should never be directed at or about a baby.
