Upington Man Gets 15-Year Sentence For Brutal Axe Attack That Left Sister Blind In One Eye

A 32-year-old man from Upington, Northern Cape, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after a brutal attack on his sister left her permanently disfigured and blind in one eye.

The Upington Regional Court handed down the sentence this week after finding Trevor Isaacs guilty of attempted murder. The incident occurred on 7 July, following a heated argument between Isaacs and his sister after their electricity was cut off due to non-payment.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, Isaacs’s sister had confronted him for spending his money on drugs and alcohol instead of household necessities.

Enraged, Isaacs stormed out of the room, returned with an axe, and struck her in the face.

Upington Victim Left Disfigured and Unable to Work as Chef

The 39-year-old woman, once a professional chef, was hospitalised for a month following the attack.

She permanently lost sight in her left eye and can no longer perform her previous duties in the kitchen, now limited to assisting with meal preparation due to her impaired vision.

During sentencing, prosecutor Mannini Setai led the victim’s emotional testimony. She described the immense pain and lifelong trauma caused by her brother’s violent actions.

“I could never forgive him,” she told the court, explaining how the assault disfigured her and stripped her of her independence and confidence.

Senokoatsane confirmed that the NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the severity of gender-based violence and the lasting harm it inflicts on victims and their families.
