UPDATE: Teacher Abducted Outside Gqeberha School Released After Two Days

A teacher abducted outside Happydale Special School in Algoa Park, Gqeberha, has been safely released after two harrowing days.

The 45-year-old educator was kidnapped on Monday morning by three armed men, but authorities confirmed her release late on Wednesday night.

The victim was reunited with her family, although the Hawks have yet to clarify whether a ransom was paid for her freedom.

Violent Kidnapping At Happydale Special School

The shocking incident occurred shortly after the teacher arrived at the school around 8am in her grey Toyota Fortuner.

As seen in a viral video circulating on social media, the teacher was ambushed by two men as she exited her vehicle in the school parking lot.

The kidnappers forced her into their white Toyota Corolla, firing warning shots into the air to deter any onlookers from intervening.

Authorities confirmed that the case was treated as a high priority.

Lt-Col Avele Fumba, spokesperson for the Hawks, commended the efforts of the multidisciplinary task team who exerted sufficient pressure to secure her release.

“We can confirm that the victim was safely reunited with her family on Wednesday night,” said Fumba.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Condemnation From Education Authorities And Unions

The abduction has drawn widespread condemnation from education authorities and teachers’ unions.

Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade strongly denounced the kidnapping, calling it a grave violation of educators’ rights.

“The abduction of our educators is one of the worst crimes to affect the sector.

“Actions like these undermine the fundamental right to life in a free and democratic country,” Gade said.

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) also expressed deep outrage.

“This violent incident occurred within the premises of a special school, a space meant to provide safety and learning for vulnerable learners,” the union stated.

SADTU emphasized that schools should remain safe havens, free from violence and crime, to ensure the protection of both staff and students.

Psychosocial Support For Affected Community

In the aftermath of the kidnapping, a specialized team has been dispatched to Happydale Special School to provide psychosocial support and counseling for both the staff and learners who were traumatized by the event.

Investigation is ongoing and the community remains on high alert as they await further updates.
