United Nations Condemns Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa, Urges Protection Of Migrants

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced serious concern over reports of xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, with a particular focus on KwaZulu-Natal.

He warned that attacks targeting migrants and foreign nationals pose a threat to the country’s democratic values and overall social stability.

United Nations Blames Criminal Elements Exploiting Socio-Economic Pressures

According to the UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres strongly condemned recent incidents of violence, harassment, and intimidation directed at migrants in both KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of xenophobic attacks and acts of harassment and intimidation against migrants and foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, including in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape Province,” Dujarric said.

He further criticised those responsible, stating: “These criminal acts [are] perpetrated by individuals inciting violence and exploiting socio-economic conditions.”

Guterres stressed that “violence, vigilantism and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive, democratic society governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights.”

‎Calls for Accountability and Respect for Human Rights

The United Nation chief also highlighted South Africa’s history of international solidarity during the anti-apartheid era, noting the role played by people across Africa and beyond.

“The Secretary-General recalls that South Africa’s struggle against apartheid was sustained through international and African solidarity,” said Dujarric.

Guterres welcomed assurances from authorities that those responsible for criminal acts would be investigated and prosecuted, adding that such processes “must be prompt, thorough, independent and impartial.”

While acknowledging ongoing socio-economic challenges, he emphasised that these cannot justify unlawful or discriminatory actions.

“Addressing these concerns must always be conducted lawfully, without discrimination and in a manner that upholds the human rights and dignity of all people.”

The United Nations reaffirmed its readiness to assist efforts aimed at easing tensions and protecting vulnerable communities.

“The United Nations stands ready to continue engaging in efforts to de-escalate tensions, counter incitement, protect those at risk and strengthen social cohesion.”
