Undocumented Man Sentenced To 10 Years For Damaging Telecom Towers And Stealing Batteries

The police in the Northern Cape have welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Prince Ndlovu, 38, an undocumented man found guilty of crimes linked to damaging and stealing essential infrastructure.

His sentencing comes after a nearly decade-long pursuit by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (POCI) Unit.

Telecom Towers and School Targeted in Battery Thefts

The case dates back to July 2016, when Ndlovu damaged two telecommunications towers in Warrenton, stealing multiple backup batteries used to maintain network connectivity.

In February 2017, he struck again, this time targeting a primary school in Postmasburg, where he made off with more backup batteries.

After his crimes, Ndlovu fled and successfully evaded capture for several years.

However, in February 2024, the POCI Unit tracked him down in Johannesburg. His bail application was strongly opposed by Detective Sergeant Orapeleng Mosala, ensuring he remained behind bars until the conclusion of his trial.

On Thursday, 4 September 2025, the Barkly West Regional Court sentenced Ndlovu to 10 years’ imprisonment for damaging essential infrastructure.

SAPS hailed the outcome as a victory against infrastructure-related crimes that threaten communities and services across the province.
