Umlazi Pupils Arrested Following School Vandalism In Viral Video | WATCH

A disturbing video circulating on social media has raised alarm in the KwaZulu-Natal education sector. The footage, showing pupils from Mzwamandla High School in uMlazi vandalising school property and carrying weapons, has sparked widespread condemnation.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, expressed his disappointment over the incident. “Our core focus as the Department of Education is to provide quality education, instil discipline in our pupils, and nurture them into responsible citizens. This criminal and ill-disciplined behaviour, including carrying weapons to school, will not be tolerated,” said Hlomuka.
MEC Praises Swift Action Against Pupils Involved
The MEC commended the school’s management for acting swiftly and decisively. Their actions led to the arrest of the implicated pupils, who will also face disciplinary measures in line with the school’s code of conduct. These processes will be overseen by the School Governing Body.

Hlomuka stressed that the department remains committed to maintaining discipline and accountability within schools, despite limited resources. “The department has implemented fiscal discipline and cost-cutting measures to ensure that all programmes are delivered effectively,” he explained.

The Education Department has urged communities to play a stronger role in protecting schools and supporting law enforcement efforts. Hlomuka appealed to parents, learners, and educators to remain vigilant.
“We urge members of the public, school authorities, and learners to report any form of criminal behaviour to their nearest police station,” he said.
The department emphasised that schools should remain safe spaces for learning and not breeding grounds for criminal activity.
