Two-Year-Old Boy Shot In Neck During Kensington Gun Attack

A two-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after he was caught in the crossfire during a shooting in Kensington, Cape Town, on Saturday night.

The child, identified as Emilio Lindeman Jr, was in his mother’s arms as they walked along Glider Crescent at about 10.10pm when gunmen on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed that the toddler sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Two-Year-Old Boy Injured During Kensington Shooting

The Kensington shooting is being investigated as attempted murder after the child was struck by bullets during the attack.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

“The motive for the attack is yet to be determined.

“Kensington detectives are investigating an attempted murder case.”

According to a relative, the toddler was struck twice during the shooting.

“One bullet hit him in his arm and the other one entered next to his collarbone.

“The bullet in his arm came out, but the bullet in his neck is still stuck.”

Kensington Gang Violence Under Investigation

The Kensington shooting reportedly happened amid ongoing tensions between rival gangs in the area.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Glider Crescent is divided into two sections known locally as “Glider 1” and “Glider 2”. The source alleged that the gunmen first opened fire in Glider 1 before the toddler was caught in the shooting.

Police have not confirmed whether the incident is gang-related, and investigations are continuing.

Calls For Stronger Anti-Gang Measures After Kensington Shooting

The Kensington shooting has renewed calls for tougher action against gang violence in the area.

Ward councillor Cheslyn Steenberg Daniels said he was among the first people to arrive at the scene. He praised the child’s family for acting quickly before emergency medical assistance arrived.

Steenberg Daniels also urged authorities to strengthen anti-gang operations in Kensington and Factreton, saying communities needed more specialised policing resources.

“We need more specialized resources for the area so that the challenges with gangsterism can be successfully combatted. The police are trying their best but as always, more can be done.

“We need a review of our gang strategy in the City of Cape Town and in the broader Western Cape because we can see that the current one is not working, or working the way it’s supposed to.”
