Two Suspects Killed In Shootout With Police During Gauteng Hijacking Investigation

Two suspects were killed during a confrontation with police in Reiger Park, Gauteng, as officers pursued a group allegedly linked to truck hijackings and courier vehicle robberies.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, 8 June 2026, when a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team acted on intelligence regarding suspects believed to be involved in a series of aggravated robberies across the province.

Gauteng Police Shootout Follows High-Speed Chase

Police said officers identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the suspects in Boksburg. When members attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly refused to comply and sped away.

A high-speed pursuit followed, ending in a shootout between the suspects and law enforcement officers. The vehicle eventually came to a halt near an informal settlement in Reiger Park.

According to police, two suspects fled into the settlement on foot, while two others were found fatally wounded inside the vehicle. One police vehicle sustained damage to its windscreen during the exchange of gunfire, but no officers were injured.

Unlicensed Firearms And Suspected Stolen Vehicles Recovered

The Gauteng police operation resulted in the recovery of two unlicensed firearms at the scene. Officers also seized a Mazda vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects.

Investigators later followed up on information that led them to a property in Germiston, which is suspected to have been used as a safe house by the group.

At the residence, police recovered a Chevrolet Captiva SUV that was confirmed to have been stolen in a robbery case registered in Booysens. Several false registration number plates were also discovered during the search.

Police Probe Links To Additional Hijacking And Robbery Cases

The Gauteng police investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the suspects and establish their possible involvement in other serious crimes.

Police are examining evidence recovered during the operation and are expected to determine whether the suspects can be connected to additional truck hijackings, courier vehicle robberies and related offences.

The officers involved in the operation escaped unharmed. Police said members would receive support and debriefing services through the Employee Health and Wellness programme following the incident
