Two Shot As Police Foil R1.8 Million Robbery On R55 In High-Speed Shootout

A swift, coordinated police operation ended in a violent confrontation on the R55 near Sunderland Ridge, leaving two suspects wounded and five others in custody. The suspects were intercepted shortly after a business robbery, with police recovering stolen goods worth about R1.8 million.

The joint operation brought together several law enforcement and private security units, including SAPS Gauteng Crime Intelligence, SAPS Highway Patrol, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), and private firms such as Vision Tactical, Monitor Net, and Scorpion Security Services.

Authorities say the bust followed a tip-off about a planned business robbery in the area. Law enforcement teams were deployed to monitor and intercept the suspects before they could make their escape.

High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Gunfire and Crash

After the robbery was carried out, police spotted the suspects’ getaway vehicles — a white Kia sedan and a Hino truck — travelling together on the R55. When officers attempted to stop them, the suspects allegedly opened fire, sparking a gun battle.

The chase ended abruptly when one of the vehicles crashed into a tree. During the aftermath, officers recovered two unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and the entire stolen stock, estimated at R1.8 million.
