Two SANDF Members Die After Falling Into Abandoned Mine Shaft During Illegal Mining Operation

Two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have lost their lives after falling into an abandoned mine shaft during an operation targeting illegal mining in Roodepoort on Friday morning.

Police said the soldiers were taking part in Operation Prosper when the fatal incident occurred. The members were reportedly chasing suspected illegal miners before they slipped and fell into the disused shaft.

The deaths of the SANDF members have prompted an outpouring of condolences from senior police leadership. A South African Police Service (SAPS) statement confirmed that Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and senior police officials had expressed their sympathies to the families and colleagues of the deceased.

The statement said: “Preliminary reports indicate that SANDF members were pursuing suspected illegal miners in an underground tunnel when they fell into an abandoned mine shaft. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.”

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two SANDF members. Investigations are continuing to establish exactly how the incident unfolded.
