Two Pupils Drown During School Camp In Centurion

Two young learners from Daveyton Skills School in Benoni tragically drowned during a school excursion on Monday afternoon.

The boys, aged between 13 and 16 years old, were attending a discipline camp organized by the non-governmental organization Rising Stars Generation. The camp, which began on Friday, was supposed to conclude on Monday.

According to Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, it is alleged that after the activities concluded on Monday, one of the learners suddenly ran towards a nearby river close to the campsite entrance.

Another learner followed in an attempt to bring him back. Unfortunately, the learner who ran off jumped into the river, prompting the second learner to try and rescue him. Tragically, both learners drowned as a result.

The incident was reported to emergency medical services and the police, who managed to recover their bodies. In response to the tragedy, a psycho-social support unit will be dispatched to the school to provide necessary trauma support and counselling.

Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) Matome Chiloane expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate deaths of the learners. On behalf of the department, he extended sincerest condolences to their respective families and the Daveyton Skills School community.
