Two Mpumalanga Police Officers Arrested For Alleged Corruption And Extortion

Two police officers attached to South African Police Service (SAPS) in Bethal, Mpumalanga were arrested on Wednesday over allegations of corruption and extortion.

The suspects, a sergeant and a constable stationed at Bethal Police Station, were arrested during an intelligence-driven operation led by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

Police said the incident dates back to January 2025 when the officers allegedly demanded money from a businessman who was unable to produce a licence for operating a hair salon.

According to investigators, the officers allegedly took cash from the businessman and indicated they would return for additional payments.

Mpumalanga Businessman Reported Matter To CPF

The businessman later reported the matter to a member of the Community Policing Forum, who escalated the complaint to a senior SAPS official at the station.

The report led to an internal investigation and the eventual arrest of the two officers.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 7 May 2026, facing charges of corruption and extortion.

SAPS Condemns Alleged Corruption Within Officers

Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrests and condemned the officers’ alleged conduct.

“The alleged actions of these members undermine the oath we took to serve and protect the public. As painful as it is to arrest our own, they must face the consequences of their actions,” Mkhwanazi said.

“There is no place for rotten elements who betray the badge and the communities we serve. We will continue to root out criminality within our ranks without fear, prejudice, or favour.”

Police reiterated that SAPS maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and warned that members involved in criminal conduct would face the full might of the law.
