Two-Month-Old Baby Found Dead In Caregiver’s Bed In KZN

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched an investigation after a two-month-old baby boy was found dead in the bed of his caregiver in Mhlasini early on Saturday morning.

According to reports, the infant’s mother had left him in the care of a friend on Friday afternoon, allegedly so she could attend a party at a nearby tavern.

Caregiver Discovers Baby Unresponsive at 3am

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said the caregiver told officers the baby had been sleeping beside her. She awoke around 03:00 to feed the infant and realised he was unresponsive.

After unsuccessfully attempting to contact the child’s mother, she called RUSA for help. Paramedics arrived and confirmed that the baby had no signs of life.

Officers also went to the mother’s residence, but the home was found unoccupied.

Circumstances Under Investigation

Authorities say the cause of death remains unknown and will be determined through a post-mortem examination.

Police have urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving children in the care of others, especially overnight. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are ongoing.
