Two Mitchells Plain Teenagers Shot Dead In Suspected Gang-Related Attack In Montrose Park

The Montrose Park community in Mitchells Plain has been left shaken after two teenagers were allegedly followed from a local winkel and shot dead in the street on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the victims, aged 16 and 18, were walking along Veronica Street when gunmen allegedly jumped out of a vehicle that had been following them and opened fire at close range.

Police believe the shooting may be gang-related.

South African Police Service spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that both victims died at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

Van Wyk said: “Lentegeur police registered two counts of murder following a shooting incident on Wednesday, 13 May at about 8.40pm at a premises in Veronica Road, Montrose Park. The members attended a drive-by shooting at Montrose Park.

“Upon their arrival, they found the bodies of two males aged 16 and 18 laying in the street, in front of the gate of the mentioned address. Both with multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies.

“The 16-year-old victim sustained gunshot wounds to the head, neck and stomach, and the 18-year-old male sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and stomach.

“They were declared deceased by medical personnel. The motive is believed to be gang-related.”

Community On High Alert After Deadly Montrose Park Shooting

Ward councillor Avron Plaatjies said the killings had left families and residents deeply traumatised.

“The families are quite shocked. The situation in the community is quite tense, and they are extremely cautious about what happened; the whole community is on high alert,” Plaatjies said.

“The shooting came as a shock, as the community was quiet for a very long time.

“The matter is currently under investigation, and police have their hand on the matter.”

CPF Calls For Increased Police Visibility In Lentegeur

Lentegeur Community Police Forum chairperson Michael Jacobs said reports suggest the teenagers had been followed after leaving a tuckshop where they had gone to buy a voucher.

“As the Lentegeur CPF, we condemn the killings of the two young people in Montrose Park on Wednesday evening and call on the police to ensure visibility and to track down those responsible as a matter of urgency,” he said.

“It is alleged that the two youngsters were followed coming from a tuckshop to buy a voucher, and that’s when some of the occupants exited the car and shot at both deceased at close range. It is still very tense with SAPS and Metro Police patrolling.”

Police investigations into the double murder are ongoing.
