Two Killed In Crash As Heavy Rain Batters Gauteng

Two people were killed in an early-morning crash on the East Rand as persistent rain, strong winds and cold conditions continued to lash Gauteng on Sunday.

Crash on N12 Causes Major Delays

The accident happened shortly after 4am on the N12 Comaro on-ramp, eastbound towards Ekurhuleni.

Authorities have warned that the crash is likely to cause significant traffic congestion, affecting travellers heading to OR Tambo International Airport for domestic and international flights.

The severe weather has impacted several parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with flooded roads, fallen trees, power cuts and damaged infrastructure reported across multiple areas.

Two Pronounced Dead at the Scene

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson Maswati Mdluli said the collision involved a sedan and an SUV.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that two vehicles, a sedan and an SUV, were involved. The driver of the sedan lost his life, and one passenger from the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jaws of Life had to be used to free one body from the wreckage,” said Mdluli.

Three Others Injured

Three people were transported to nearby hospitals:

  • One patient in critical condition (Priority 1)
  • Two patients in serious condition (Priority 2)

The Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services attended to remove the deceased.

Mdluli said the EMPD is investigating the cause of the crash.

“Heavy rains are continuing to pour in the city, causing poor visibility and slippery surfaces. We encourage everyone to be patient and tolerant of the situation on the road to ensure a safe arrival at their destinations,” he said.

He added that the City of Ekurhuleni will remain on high alert, continuing to respond to all weather-related emergencies.
