In a recent development, a man and a woman have made an appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court after being apprehended for their alleged involvement in defrauding the South African Revenue Service (SARS) of a substantial sum of money, amounting to at least R995,113.

According to the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala, the duo, operating under their company, Thokothoko Boven 143 (Pty) Ltd, purportedly submitted fraudulent tax returns to SARS.

Tshabalala revealed that the alleged fraudulent activity took place during the 2015/2016 tax year, during which the accused reportedly submitted falsified tax returns. Consequently, SARS transferred an amount of R995,113.30 into the company’s bank account.

The case has been adjourned until March 8, when it will be transferred to the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. This step is being taken to ensure that the matter is dealt with appropriately, given its nature and the potential implications for the accused individuals.

The arrest and subsequent court proceedings highlight the commitment of law enforcement agencies, such as the Hawks, in combating financial crimes and protecting the integrity of the taxation system.

SARS plays a crucial role in the economic development of South Africa, and any attempt to defraud the organization is taken seriously.
