Two Dead, Seven Teens Shot As Wentworth Gunmen Hunt Down Victims In Daylight

KwaZulu-Natal police have launched an urgent manhunt after Wentworth was turned into a war zone on Friday morning when gunmen executed a brazen daylight attack that left two people dead and seven others — mostly teens — fighting for their lives.

The shooting erupted just after 9am on Major Calvert Street, where a group of young people were sitting outside a flat. Witnesses say a grey Mazda 3 pulled up before two armed men jumped out and unleashed a hail of bullets.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed: “Two men got out of the vehicle and fired shots towards the people who were seated.”

Wentworth Gunmen ‘Dressed Like Municipal Workers’ 

In a chilling twist, a private security officer told reporters the attackers were wearing municipal overalls, making it appear as though workers had arrived — until the first shots rang out.

The massacre didn’t end there. As some of the youths fled for their lives, the gunmen allegedly chased them down, continuing to fire as they scattered through the street.

Two victims died at the scene. The seven injured — all between the ages of 15 and 22 — were rushed to hospital in private cars, bleeding heavily from gunshot wounds.

The Southland Sun reported that one of the dead was a child, deepening the horror of a community long terrorised by gang violence. A dog was also shot and killed in the chaos.

Gang Turf War Suspected After Police Cracked Down on Local Crime Bosses

While investigators have not confirmed the motive, police say the hit has all the hallmarks of Wentworth’s notorious gang and drug turf wars.

“The motive is unknown; however, gang and drug-related turf wars cannot be ruled out,” Netshiunda said.

The attack came days after a major police operation that led to the arrest of two alleged gang and drug kingpins — a move that may have triggered a violent retaliation.

Wentworth residents say they are living in fear as gunmen continue to terrorise the community with drive-by shootings, assassinations and turf-related violence.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward immediately as the manhunt intensifies.
