Two CIT Robbery Suspects Killed In Shootout With KZN Police

Two men believed to be connected to a brazen cash-in-transit robbery in Verulam were shot and killed during a confrontation with police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The fatal shootout unfolded in the Nhlazatshe area of Shayamoya, Edendale, just hours after armed suspects stormed a cash delivery vehicle in Verulam on Monday, 23 February 2026.

Verulam Cash-in-Transit Robbery

Chaos erupted on Monday afternoon when a group of at least 12 armed suspects targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle at the intersection of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads in Verulam.

According to police, the gang forced the security vehicle to a halt before allegedly disarming the guards of three firearms. The suspects then fled the scene with an undisclosed sum of money.

Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the daring robbery.

Intelligence Operation Leads Police to Edendale Hideout

Just after midnight on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, police acted on intelligence indicating that several individuals linked to the Verulam robbery were hiding at a property in Edendale.

Officers swiftly operationalised the information and moved in on the identified house in Shayamoya’s Nhlazatshe area.

When police approached the premises, gunfire broke out between officers and the suspects, triggering a tense exchange.

Two Suspects Killed, Firearms and Getaway Vehicles Recovered

During the shootout, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded. A third suspect managed to escape and remains at large.

At the scene, police recovered three firearms — two rifles and a handgun — along with multiple rounds of ammunition.

Investigators also seized a Volkswagen Polo believed to have been used in the Verulam cash-in-transit robbery. Inside the garage, officers discovered a bakkie fitted with numerous number plates, raising further suspicion about its possible use in criminal activities.

Police investigations are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to track down the remaining suspect and establish the full extent of the robbery network.
