Marx Maria Karien, 58, and Khahliso Isabel Motseremeli, 48, appeared in court on November 18, 2024, for their alleged roles in defrauding the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Fraudulent UIF Claims

Karien, the director of Pop Snax Pty Ltd, allegedly defrauded the UIF of over R1 million by submitting false claims for individuals who were not employed by the company during the pandemic.

Ongoing Investigations and Legal Action

Both cases are part of a wider effort to investigate and expose corruption related to the Covid-19 relief funds, aimed at helping South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens during the pandemic. The evidence collected in these cases has been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action.

The fraudulent activities are seen as a breach of public trust, particularly as the relief system was designed to support individuals and businesses hit hardest by the pandemic.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to bringing those who misused public funds to justice, underscoring the importance of holding accountable those who exploited systems designed to provide relief during times of national crisis.
